Drew Hughes joined Hillhouse Group in July 2023 as Surfacing Manager, bringing with him extensive experience in civil engineering, surfacing and local authority infrastructure delivery. In June 2026, he was appointed Operations Manager for HG Contracts, expanding his responsibilities across both surfacing and civil engineering operations.
In his role as Surfacing Manager, Drew oversaw the full surfacing operation, supporting projects of all sizes from initial enquiry through to planning, delivery and completion. His work involved close collaboration with the sales team, clients, specifiers, consultants and operational teams to ensure projects were delivered safely, efficiently, on time and within budget.
As Operations Manager, Drew’s role is both operational and commercial, with responsibility for coordinating teams, scheduling works, managing subcontractors, supporting health and safety, overseeing plant maintenance and ensuring strong communication across every stage of delivery. His remit now covers major surfacing and civil engineering contracts, including significant local authority projects such as Hanover Street and Stockwell Street for Glasgow City Council.
Before joining Hillhouse Group, Drew spent 29 years working within local authorities across South West Scotland and Glasgow City. He began his career as a trainee civil engineer and progressed through a range of technical and operational roles, ultimately becoming an Engineering Officer. He then spent around three years with Kiely Bros UK as Contracts Manager for Scotland, delivering projects across the country before joining Hillhouse.
Drew also holds the NEBOSH National Certificate, supporting his practical approach to health, safety and responsible project delivery.
With a career built on hands-on experience, technical knowledge and steady progression, Drew brings a strong understanding of public sector infrastructure, project delivery and operational leadership to his role at HG Contracts.
I’ve always enjoyed being involved in projects from the early planning stages right through to delivery on site. No two jobs are the same, and that’s what keeps the role interesting. For me, it’s about making sure the right people, plant and planning are in place so that work is delivered safely, efficiently and to the standard our clients expect. Hillhouse has a strong team across surfacing and civil engineering, and I’m looking forward to building on that as we continue to grow the Contracts side of the business.
