Hillhouse Quarry Group has successfully completed the supply of 3,600m³ of concrete to the Mill Rig Wind Farm, a flagship renewable energy development located near Darvel in East Ayrshire.
Developed by OnPath Energy and constructed by civil engineering specialists RJ McLeod, the project will generate enough clean electricity to power more than 45,000 homes across Scotland, contributing directly to the nation’s renewable energy targets.
This project highlights the crucial role Hillhouse plays as a trusted supplier to major renewable energy projects, combining material quality, logistical capability, and operational expertise to deliver on some of Scotland’s most ambitious infrastructure developments.
The Mill Rig Wind Farm comprises six of the UK’s most advanced turbines, each standing at 250 metres to tip height. Once operational, the site will produce 33.4MW of renewable energy, a significant contribution to Scotland’s net-zero ambitions.
Beyond energy production, the project also brings direct community benefits to the local area, including a dedicated community fund that will deliver long-term support for local projects, sustainability initiatives, and investment in skills. By backing such developments, Hillhouse supports not just Scotland’s energy future, but also the communities in which these projects are located.
To meet the demands of the turbine foundation works, Hillhouse coordinated a complex, large-scale concrete operation involving:
3,600m³ of concrete supplied
6 continuous pours of 600m³ each
15 delivery vehicles in constant rotation
Three concrete plants mobilised: London Road (Glasgow) Rapid R4000 plant, Troon Quarry (Ayrshire) Rapid R3000 plant, and a McCrory MCM60 mobile plant on site
This carefully planned delivery schedule provided uninterrupted supply for the turbine foundations, ensuring the project timeline remained on track.
Hillhouse Quarry Group was able to support the project not only through its ready-mix operations, but also through its own aggregate reserves.
Primary aggregates from Hillhouse Quarry, Troon provided a consistent and reliable supply of high-quality stone.
Specialist sand from Garpel Quarry, Muirkirk contributed to the carefully designed concrete mix.
This vertically integrated model allowed Hillhouse to control quality from quarry to pour, ensuring that the concrete met the highest standards for strength and durability.
This project was made possible through close collaboration with our partners:
