CEO Alistair Borthwick's "Big Interview" with Kenny Kemp.

Alistair-Borthwick-Hillhouse-CEO

Hillhouse Quarry Group continues to invest in the people, locations and production capability needed to support Scotland’s construction and infrastructure sectors over the long term.

That approach has underpinned the business for generations and remains central to its growth today.

The acquisition of the Skene Group extended the Hillhouse quarrying footprint into Fife and the Lothians, strengthening the Group’s ability to supply aggregates and construction materials across a wider area of Scotland.

The next stage of that investment is taking shape at Soutra Mains Quarry in Midlothian, where Edinburgh Asphalt is preparing to open.

The new facility will add significant asphalt production capability in the east of Scotland, with direct access to locally produced aggregates and strong connections to Edinburgh, the Lothians, the Borders and the wider road network.

For CEO Alistair Borthwick, growth is closely linked to long-term investment and confidence in Scotland’s future infrastructure needs. He points to the importance of resilient local supply chains, continued investment in productive assets and creating the conditions for businesses to plan beyond the short term.

That longer-term outlook also extends beyond quarrying. Projects such as Ride Ness, the mountain bike destination being developed at Glendoe Estate on the shores of Loch Ness, demonstrate the wider Group’s willingness to invest in new diversification opportunities while maintaining a strong focus on its core construction materials businesses.

Quarrying, asphalt, concrete and related construction services remain central to Hillhouse Group, and the opening of Edinburgh Asphalt represents another significant step in the continued development of that capability.

Alistair discusses these themes, alongside the wider development of Hillhouse Group and his views on Scotland’s business and infrastructure environment, in a recent Interview with journalist Kenny Kemp for The Business, which is distributed with the Sunday Times.
