Zander Calderwood is Asphalt Production Manager at Hillhouse Group, with responsibility for overseeing asphalt production across the Group’s asphalt plants and ensuring consistent performance, quality and reliability across operations.
Zander began his career in the construction industry at the age of 15, working for his family’s civil engineering business. This early experience gave him a strong grounding in the fundamentals of the industry and helped shape his practical, hands-on approach to operations.
At 18, Zander moved into the quarrying sector with Tillicoultry Quarries, where he worked as a Quarry Operative and developed a detailed understanding of quarry processes, procedures and production environments. He later specialised in asphalt production and, after two years as an asphalt plant operator, progressed into a supervisory role at the age of 22.
During his time as a supervisor, Zander gained extensive experience in day-to-day asphalt plant production, maintenance planning and operational coordination across multiple sites. He was involved in a number of high-profile projects, including the M80 central reservation upgrade and works at Wick, Glasgow and Edinburgh airports.
Zander joined Hillhouse Group on 1 August 2013 as Plant Supervisor at Glasgow Asphalt. At the time, the plant was still under construction, giving him the opportunity to contribute to the planning, layout and set-up of the site. Over the following six years, he managed key aspects of health, safety and environmental performance, production, quality, service and maintenance, while supporting major projects including the M8, M73 and M74 Motorway Improvements Project.
In 2018, Zander was also involved in the design of the Group’s Central Asphalt plant. He moved to Central Asphalt full-time in April 2019 to support the build, drawing on the experience he had gained during the development of Glasgow Asphalt.
Zander has since progressed into his current Group-wide role, where he is responsible for the day-to-day management of asphalt production, ensuring output, quality and on-time delivery targets are met while maximising plant availability and uptime.
Reflecting on his role, Zander comments:
Being involved in the development of new plants from the ground up has been a major part of my career with Hillhouse. My focus is always on building reliable operations, maintaining high standards and making sure our plants deliver the quality and service our customers expect.
