Mick Smith

Quarry Manager - Garpel Quarry

Mick Smith is Quarry Manager at Garpel Sand and Gravel, responsible for the safe, efficient and consistent day-to-day operation of one of Hillhouse Group’s key aggregate sites.

Mick joined Hillhouse in 2015 as Deputy Manager at Garpel, before progressing into his current role as Quarry Manager. He brings more than 40 years’ experience in the sector, having previously worked in open cast coal mining with Scottish Coal, in a wide range of operational and supervisory roles.

Before joining Hillhouse, Mick gained extensive hands-on experience as a heavy plant operator, wash plant operator and supervisor, processing supervisor and fixed plant manager, covering 13 sites. His background includes the repair, refurbishment and recommissioning of fixed plants, giving him a strong practical understanding of both production and plant performance.

Mick joined Garpel during the site’s development and played an important role in establishing the operation as it stands today. He was involved in overseeing the construction of both plants, setting up the lagoon system and developing key infrastructure including power and water supplies, roads and office cabins.

In his current role, Mick oversees production, health and safety, administration and the achievement of site targets. He remains hands-on in both repairs and operations, bringing practical experience and a detailed understanding of the site to his leadership approach.

Garpel plays an important role in the wider Hillhouse Group supply chain, with its sand products used across many of the Group’s operations, including concrete and asphalt production. Mick’s work helps ensure the site continues to deliver reliable, high-quality material to support customers and projects across Scotland.

Reflecting on his role, Mick comments:

Garpel has developed significantly since I joined the business, and it has been rewarding to be part of that journey from the early stages. My focus is on keeping the site running safely and efficiently, while making sure we produce the quality materials the wider Group relies on every day.
