David Davies

Asphalt Maintenance Manager

David Davies is Asphalt Maintenance Manager at Hillhouse Group, responsible for overseeing maintenance across the Group’s asphalt plants and supporting the safe, reliable and efficient operation of key production assets.

David began his career at the age of 17 with Lundy’s Engineering, working as a labourer within the civil department alongside steel erectors and pipe fitters on chemical plant projects. During this time, he started a welding and fabrication apprenticeship and spent around five years with the business, leaving as a coded MIG welder before relocating to Scotland.

After moving to Scotland, David joined Tarmac’s Ravelrig Quarry as a backshift fitter, where he worked for just over two years before moving to Tillicoultry Quarries as a fitter at Northfield Quarry. He later joined Forsyth of Denny, working across sand and gravel and aggregate quarries throughout the Central Belt, including projects involving cranes where he also gained experience as a slinger/signaller.

David went on to work at Cairneyhill Quarry, first as a fitter before progressing into an asphalt plant supervisor role. He later joined Tom Young’s Engineering as a fitter/welder, supporting projects across quarries and new construction sites throughout central Scotland. These roles gave him broad, hands-on experience across quarrying, asphalt production, plant maintenance and site operations.

David joined Hillhouse as Chargehand Fitter at the Glasgow asphalt plant. Over time, he progressed into a supervisor role before becoming Maintenance Manager for all asphalt plants. His career reflects a strong practical understanding of plant operations, maintenance requirements and the importance of keeping production running safely and efficiently.

In his current role, David is responsible for planned and reactive maintenance across Hillhouse Group’s asphalt plants. He works closely with operational teams to minimise downtime, support plant reliability and ensure maintenance activity is carried out safely and effectively.

David has also completed his NVQ Level 6 in Health, Safety and Environmental Management, alongside his NEBOSH qualification, supporting his practical experience with recognised health, safety and environmental training.

Reflecting on his role, David comments:

Maintenance is about keeping plants running safely, reliably and efficiently. My background has given me a hands-on understanding of the equipment, the pressures of production and the importance of working closely with the teams on site to get the job done properly.
