James Tyler is Contracts Manager at Hillhouse Group, responsible for managing precast concrete installation and fixing works across a wide range of construction projects.
James has worked with Hillhouse for around 20 years, with only a short break in service when he spent nine months working as a Health and Safety Consultant. He originally joined the business as part of a fixing crew, working as an accredited slinger/signaller for around a decade before progressing into a Site Supervisor role and then becoming Contracts Manager, a position he has held for around 10 years.
Before joining Hillhouse, James worked as a painter, decorator and plasterer, gaining first-hand experience of life on construction sites. This background gave him a practical understanding of site conditions, sequencing, safety expectations and the pressures faced by clients and contractors.
In his current role, James liaises closely with clients to schedule and manage precast installations and fixing works, ensuring that projects are delivered safely, efficiently and in line with client objectives, deadlines and budgets. His responsibilities include organising teams, planning labour, managing materials and haulage, and working closely with internal departments to ensure smooth coordination from production through to installation.
Health and safety is James’s top priority. He is responsible for ensuring the safety of his team and others on site, including the preparation and management of RAMS and lifting plans. His previous experience as a Health and Safety Consultant further strengthens his approach to planning, risk management and safe delivery.
James plays an important role in maintaining strong client relationships. He understands that every project matters, whether it is a smaller £5,000 job or a major contract worth more than £1 million. Client satisfaction is central to his approach, and he works hard to ensure that customers are happy with the service they receive and are confident to return or recommend Hillhouse for future work.
Over his time with Hillhouse, James has built up extensive knowledge of precast installation and site delivery. His experience, loyalty and understanding of the business allow him to manage complex requirements with confidence and support positive outcomes for both clients and internal teams.
Major projects delivered by James as Contracts Manager include Dover Street for JR Group, a five-storey steel and concrete private residential development, and the Finnieston development on Argyle Street, Glasgow, for Westpoint Homes.
Reflecting on his role, James added:
I have been with Hillhouse for a long time because it is a good company that looks after its people. Over the years, I have built up a lot of experience across the fixing side of the business, and that knowledge helps you understand what needs to happen on site and how to keep things moving properly. For me, health and safety always comes first. The priority is making sure our team and everyone around us are working safely, with the right planning, RAMS and lifting arrangements in place before we start. Client satisfaction is also a big part of the role. Whether it is a smaller job or a major project, the aim is always the same: deliver the work safely, keep the client informed, meet the programme, and make sure they are happy to come back to Hillhouse again.”
