Heather Howat

Sales and Distribution Co‑Ordinator

Heather Howat has been part of Hillhouse Quarry since September 2021, joining as a Sales and Distribution Co-Ordinator. Her journey at Hillhouse has been one of growth, resilience, and a true testament to the company’s commitment to supporting its people, no matter the challenges they face.

Initially, Heather’s role involved organising artic movements, reporting waiting times, and taking orders. As she gained more experience on the phones, she was entrusted with planning daily tipper movements and preparing weekly haulage reports.

But in May 2023, Heather faced an unexpected health setback that saw her in and out of hospital for weeks, undergoing tests and scans. Hillhouse’s support during this time was unwavering. After her diagnosis, the company adapted her role, ensuring her health always came first. Heather moved across to the sales team, where she became the central administrative support for all quotes, tenders, reports, and queries, something that had never been done before within the team.

The company’s flexibility allowed Heather to work from home during her recovery and introduced her through a phased return back to full time hours within the workplace, giving her the time she needed to ensure her health and wellbeing was prioritised.  This was a pivotal moment in Heather’s career. Not only was her new role created to suit her needs, but it also came with the responsibility of developing her own reporting and management processes. This sense of independence and ownership was both empowering and rewarding, and Heather quickly adapted, honing her skills in organisation and teamwork. As the role evolved, Heather found a passion for it, realising the importance that her administrative support and capabilities aided not only the sales team but how her work contributed to the business’ operations overall.

In September 2024, Heather was given the opportunity to test out a new challenge, becoming a Sales Representative. After six months, she recognised that the administrative side was where she felt most comfortable and decided to return to the office full-time. But her journey at Hillhouse didn’t stop there.

In February 2025, Heather was appointed to a new role with her colleague, taking on the responsibility of managing the Community Benefits Scheme, where they work closely with 15 councils to contribute back to local communities. Whether it’s sponsoring organisations, presenting at schools, or hosting visits to the quarry, Heather relishes the opportunity to make a positive impact in her community.

Heather has been instrumental in organising events like Hillhouse’s stand at Ayr Show, strengthening customer relationships and promoting the business. She’s also committed to her own professional growth, having been supported by Hillhouse to achieve her Transport Manager’s CPC. This qualification has expanded her knowledge of the transport industry, giving her insight into every aspect of running a transport company and further enhancing her role within Hillhouse.

Heather’s commitment extends to her sporting life, too. She plays field hockey for Ardrossan Ladies (A.A.F.P.H.C.) in League One, competing against some of the most talented teams in the region.

Her athleticism and determination shine both on and off the field.

Heather’s interest in the haulage industry led her to gain her HGV licence (Class 1 & 2) before COVID-19, a personal achievement she’s proud of. While she doesn’t have as much time to drive as she’d like, Heather still finds time to help out with her parent’s haulage company during holidays and weekends.

When she’s not busy working or playing hockey, she enjoys working on the family farm, walking her family-trio of labradors, and attending both, agricultural shows and truck shows, where she can socialise with others within the industry.

Heather’s life is a delicate balance of hard work, family, and passion for her interests. Her dedication to both Hillhouse Quarry and her family business reflects the same strong values that Hillhouse holds dear; commitment, support, and the drive to always grow and evolve. At Hillhouse, Heather isn’t just a valued employee; she’s a vital part of the family, always going the extra mile to contribute to both her workplace and her community.
