Mineral Products, An Industry Overview

Mineral products don’t just support the economy, they shape it.

As one of the UK’s most important primary producers, the mineral products industry plays a critical role in a wide range of sectors. It’s the largest supplier to the construction industry, with materials that are essential for everything from housing and commercial development to transport, energy and water infrastructure.

Beyond construction, industrial minerals like silica sand, lime and clay are vital to processes such as glassmaking, steel production, ceramics, environmental protection, agriculture and even pharmaceuticals.

From the roads we travel to the homes we live in and the utilities we depend on, mineral products are the foundation of modern life in the UK, powering progress in ways most people rarely see.

A Cornerstone of British Manufacturing

The mineral products sector is the unsung engine behind the UK’s built environment.

From aggregates and asphalt to cement, concrete, mortar, lime, silica sand and stone, it delivers the raw materials that underpin almost every part of the economy. In total, around 419 million tonnes of these essential products are supplied across the UK each year.

That’s 1.7 million tonnes moving through the supply chain every working day, making it the largest flow of material in the entire economy. No other sector comes close.

With a workforce of over 80,000 people and an annual contribution of £22 billion, the mineral products industry is one of the country’s largest and most vital manufacturing sectors.

More information on the Mineral Products industry can be found at the Mineral Products Association website.

A Diverse and Inclusive Sector

It’s not all hard hats and heavy machinery.

Across the UK, over 80,000 people are employed in roles that span everything from site operations to environmental planning, technical services, and logistics. It’s a sector built on variety, not just in the work itself, but in the people who make it happen.

Diversity and inclusion are increasingly seen as essential to long-term success. By bringing together individuals with different backgrounds and experiences, the industry fosters new ideas, stronger teamwork, and a more respectful culture.

Many major clients now expect the businesses they work with to demonstrate clear commitments to equality and inclusion. It’s not a trend, it’s a reflection of the values that shape a modern, responsible industry.
